Tsunami Warning Issued After Series of Strong Earthquakes Off Russian Coast
A tsunami warning has been issued following a series of powerful earthquakes off the coast of Russia.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded the strongest quake at a magnitude of 7.5, which followed earlier tremors measuring 5.0 and 6.7. Some reports listed the final quake at 7.4 on the Richter scale.
As a precaution, a tsunami watch has been placed for Hawaii. Initial alerts issued for Guam and American Samoa have now been lifted.
The USGS warned that hazardous tsunami waves could be generated within a 300-kilometre radius of the epicentre, located in the Pacific Ocean near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, a Russian city with a population of approximately 160,000.
